Championing Ngäbe Culture Through Gastronomy: A Magical Evening

Championing Ngäbe Culture Through Gastronomy: A Magical Evening at @lacoralinaislandhouse!

On March 30, 2025, cultural activist Felipe Baker and Grupo Maito’s Chef Mario Castrellón presented their project, Ari Ugüenrien @ariuguenrienproject, to the Bocas community for the first time. An exclusive selection of dishes were offered showcasing ingredients commonly used in ancestral recipes from the village of Río Caña, Kusapín, in the comarca Ngäbe Buglé.

We were honored with the presence Delfina Serrano, Vianeth Baker, and Esther Abrego—three of the 15 ladies from Río Caña who are the protagonists of this new adventure, illuminating Ngäbe culture for the world.

Mark your calendars for a special benefit dinner on September 16, 2025, at La Coralina Island House, which will again feature the ladies of Rio Caña and their traditional Ngäbe cuisine. The project is currently fundraising to bring this initiative to life. Visit www.ariuguenrien.org to learn more and make a direct donation.

A special shout-out to el Grupo Cultural J. Monico Cruz Ngäbrion (@josemonicocruz), whose performances added deeper meaning to the evening’s celebration. Stay tuned for their interview!
